Renowned Indian ghazal legend Pankaj Udhas dies on Monday

Renowned Indian ghazal and playback singer Pankaj Udhas passed away on Monday following an extended period of illness, as confirmed by his family.

The 72-year-old maestro’s daughter Nayab shared the news via her Instagram account, expressing the family’s sorrow. In the statement, it was announced, “With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on February 26, 2024, after battling a long-term illness.”

Following the announcement, condolences poured in from the film and music community for the veteran singer. Pankaj Udhas, known for his timeless hits like “Chitthi Aayi Hai,” breathed his last in the morning at Breach Candy Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. His final rites are scheduled for Tuesday.

With a career spanning over four decades, Pankaj Udhas garnered numerous prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri, Kalakar Award, K L Saigal Award for Best Ghazal Singer of the Year, and an Achievement Award for his efforts in popularizing ghazals worldwide.

He is survived by his wife Farida, daughters Nayaab and Reva, and brothers Nirmal and Manhar.
