LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif has put forward his younger brother and party president Shehbaz Sharif as the nominee for the country’s prime ministerial position, announced Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb on Tuesday.

Marriyum Aurangzeb shared the nominations on X (formerly Twitter), stating that PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz has been nominated for the position of Punjab’s chief minister.

During a press briefing, Shehbaz Sharif expressed his desire for his brother Nawaz Sharif to accept the role of prime minister. He also confirmed that Maryam Nawaz, the PML-N Senior Vice President, would be the party’s candidate for Punjab chief minister after consultations.

He extended gratitude to PML-Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain for facilitating discussions among various political parties, emphasizing the significance of demonstrating unity to the nation.

Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the conclusion of the electoral process and emphasized that the focus must now shift towards addressing the nation’s challenges, particularly the economic crisis. He stressed the importance of a unified leadership to stabilize the economy and move the nation forward.

Noting the presence of a two-thirds majority of the National Assembly among the parties attending the meeting, he acknowledged the majority of PTI-backed independents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He expressed respect for the PTI’s nominee for the chief minister position in the province.

When queried about Asif Ali Zardari’s potential candidacy for the presidency, Shehbaz Sharif assured that they would not disappoint.

Furthermore, the former prime minister called for an end to personal ego issues, advocating for revolutionary measures to address the country’s economic challenges. He extended an invitation to all political stakeholders to support the Charter of Economy and promote unity among parties, urging them to move beyond past grievances.
