Pakistanis are gearing up for the 12th general elections this week, but the looming polls are overshadowed by security threats, with several candidates facing fatal attacks and injuries.

In response to the terror threats on election day, authorities are considering a proposal to temporarily suspend mobile phone services and disrupt internet access in sensitive areas on Wednesday and Thursday.

Concerns about potential militant exploitation of online platforms for coordinating terror attacks during the polling process have prompted the Pakistani government to contemplate cutting communication systems ahead of the elections.

Despite media reports circulating about the possible suspension of mobile and internet services, no clarification has been provided by any member of the federal cabinet or PTA official regarding a shutdown.

Pakistanis, who have experienced internet service suspensions during recent political activities, express worries about the impact of a mobile phone services shutdown on Election Day. Such shutdowns not only disrupt business operations but also raise concerns about communication blockages, particularly during crucial events like elections.

The proposal for a shutdown was discussed in an ECP meeting, shedding light on the law and order situation in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Meanwhile, Balochistan Information Minister Jan Achakzai stated that internet services would be suspended around sensitive polling stations in the region during elections. He specifically mentioned Turbat, Mach, Chaman, and other areas where internet service restrictions would be implemented to prioritize the safety of civilians, according to the caretaker government.
