The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has recently submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for a fuel adjustment that could lead to an increase in electricity prices by Rs. 5 per unit for one month. This request is scheduled to be heard by NEPRA on March 28th and, if approved, could result in consumers bearing a burden of over Rs. 40 billion.

In February, a total of 6.876 billion units of electricity were sold, with various generation sources contributing to the supply. The breakdown of generation sources includes 24.77% from water, 13.94% from local coal, 1.89% from imported coal, 11.04% from local gas, 20.33% from imported LNG, and 23.29% from nuclear fuel.

It’s important to clarify that if NEPRA approves the request, the increase will not be directly applied to electric consumers, as stated in CPPA’s request.
