ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Iran have appointed Border Liaison Officers of Colonel rank for counter-terrorism, sources said on Sunday.

Border Liaison Officers are set to assume their roles along the Pakistan-Iran border within a few days, as per sources.

Under the bilateral agreement, Pakistani liaison officers will be stationed in Zahedan, Iran, while Iranian liaison officers from the IRGC will be deployed in Turbat, Balochistan.

This decision was made during the visit of the Iranian foreign minister to Pakistan on January 29. Pakistani defense sources have hailed the appointment of liaison officers as a positive development, stating that it will enhance cooperation between both countries in combating terrorism in a more organized manner.

Additionally, authorities from Pakistan and Iran are nearing the finalization of a security agreement, which is expected to include intelligence sharing and mutual assistance in counter-terrorism efforts.

Both countries are also contemplating a ban on terrorist organizations operating against them, with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2014. Another significant development occurred during a recent meeting between Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his Iranian counterpart, with Mohsin set to visit Iran in the near future following an invitation from the Iranian side.
