The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has approved the blocking of mobile phone SIM cards for 1.8 million non-filers nationwide, marking a significant step towards fulfilling International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions.

This decision, endorsed by the FBR chairman, aims to strengthen tax compliance and revenue generation ahead of the next IMF loan program.

Lists of non-filers and relevant regulations have been compiled and forwarded to the appropriate authorities for action. Field formations have been directed to gather data on non-filers from 2023, with chief commissioners responsible for finalizing and submitting lists to the FBR.

Furthermore, the FBR has been granted authority to disconnect electricity connections of non-filers, reinforcing its role in ensuring tax compliance.

Originally planned to commence in January 2024, this operation has been postponed until after Eid. It is expected to significantly boost tax revenue and meet IMF conditions, thereby enhancing Pakistan’s economic framework.

With 145 district tax officers empowered with special authorities, the FBR is well-positioned to implement this initiative nationwide effectively.

IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva stated on Thursday that Pakistan is in talks with the IMF regarding a potential follow-up program to its nine-month, $3 billion stand-by arrangement.

Georgieva noted that Pakistan has been successful in completing its existing program with the IMF, with its economy showing some improvement and reserves being accumulated. She highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to this trajectory but also flagged issues the country still needs to address.
