Pakistan has responded to a mounting backlog in passport clearance and heightened security concerns by announcing a significant increase in passport issuance fees.

Spearheaded by the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGI&P), the decision comes amidst challenges caused by a shortage of lamination paper, resulting in prolonged waiting times for passport applicants.

The backlog issue has become increasingly pressing, with waiting periods stretching to several months, leading to inconvenience and frustration among citizens.

To address this, the DGI&P has introduced a new fee structure aimed at streamlining services and enhancing security measures.

Under the revised fee schedule:

  • A 36-page passport valid for five years will now cost Rs. 12,500.
  • The fee for a 10-year passport has increased to Rs 16,200.
  • Individuals opting for a 72-page travel document with a five-year validity period will pay Rs 18,500, while the 10-year variant is priced at Rs 25,200.
  • A 100-page passport with a 10-year validity period will now cost Rs 32,000.

These fee adjustments are part of broader reforms initiated by the DGI&P to improve passport services and strengthen security protocols.

However, concerns persist regarding the immediate impact on the backlog and waiting times for passport issuance.

The implementation of urgent and fast-track fees for passport processing has been a temporary measure to manage the backlog.

The fee hike aims to generate the necessary revenue to address operational challenges and enhance overall service efficiency.

The DGI&P remains committed to addressing these challenges and ensuring a seamless and secure passport issuance process for all citizens.
