KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday predicted that Karachi is expected to experience rain showers and thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday, as the city continues to suffer from intense heat.

According to the Met Office, storms are anticipated before the thunderstorms, with rainfall also expected in the city’s suburbs during the afternoon or evening. A dust storm hit parts of the urban center, while the overall weather remained hot and humid.

The day before, the Met Office predicted isolated heavy rainfall in various parts of Sindh, including Karachi. In a statement on Tuesday, the PMD forecasted dust-thunderstorms or rain with isolated heavy rainfall from June 26 to July 1 in different parts of Sindh province.

Additionally, the Met Office confirmed that moist currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are entering the southern and eastern parts of the country and are expected to reach the upper regions by Thursday. Thundershowers with gusty winds are expected in parts of Sindh and other provinces.

In recent years, Karachi has faced hazardous weather conditions, particularly during summers, with heatwaves and a lack of cool breeze.

The increasing urbanization and reduction of green spaces have significantly affected the city’s climate. Environmentalists and climate experts have labeled Karachi a concrete jungle due to the extensive cutting down of old trees for estate development, which has contributed to rising temperatures and heatstroke deaths.
