The Lahore High Court has mandated revisions to Immigration Department regulations, ensuring women can retain their father’s name on national identity cards and passports.

Justice Asim Hafeez’s order demands amendments within three months, responding to Meher Bano Langriyal’s petition advocating for married women’s right to their father’s name inclusion.

Current rules often force married women to adopt their husbands’ names, hindering those who prefer paternal lineage representation.

Langriyal’s plea emphasized women’s autonomy regardless of marital status. The ruling signals progress for women’s rights, emphasizing personal choice and identity.

It recognizes the significance of allowing women to choose their official document representation.

The Immigration Department now faces the task of regulatory revision to comply with the court’s mandate.

Expected within three months, these amendments will grant women the option to retain their father’s name on computerized national identity cards (CNICs) and passports.

Women’s rights groups and advocates welcome the decision, viewing it as a stride towards gender equality and individual autonomy in Pakistan.
