The Punjab government is set to launch its first-ever Livestock Card scheme in 2024, aimed at providing interest-free loans to farmers. Approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the initiative is designed to economically empower livestock farmers.

During a meeting focused on enhancing facilities for those in the livestock business, Chief Minister Nawaz emphasized the government’s commitment to making livestock farmers economically independent.

Officials highlighted that the interest-free loans will be accessible to both male and female dairy farmers in South Punjab’s rural areas, benefiting over 40,000 farmers.

The scheme will provide loans of up to Rs 250,000 for the purchase of animal feed, with a repayment period of 90 days.

Additionally, there will be provisions for loans up to Rs 270,000 for purchasing wanda, silage, and mineral mixtures. The Chief Minister has directed that the loan acquisition process be simplified to ensure ease of access for farmers.

Moreover, the project will include an ‘Animal Identity Traceability System’ to enhance livestock care. Farmers will receive facilities for free animal tagging, free insemination services, and quality testing of wanda and silage.

The Livestock Card scheme represents a significant step towards improving the livelihood of Punjab’s livestock farmers, paving the way for their economic self-sufficiency, and enhancing the overall productivity of the livestock sector.
