Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s capital, Peshawar, have decided to suspend mobile phone services on Muharram 9 and 10 for security reasons amid Ashura processions.

Peshawar’s Capital City Police Officer, Qasim Ali, informed a private news channel that this measure will ensure foolproof security during the commemorative period.

The decision aims to prevent any untoward incidents as processions and special gatherings are held across Pakistan, including Peshawar, to honor the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain.

The suspension of mobile phone signals is seen as a precautionary step to maintain public safety during these significant religious events.

In conjunction with this security measure, the federal government has announced public holidays on Muharram 9 and 10 (July 16 and 17) for Ashura 2024. An official notification has been issued to confirm these holidays.

The new Hijri year 1446 began on Monday, July 8. The announcement followed a meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, which included representatives from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Department of Meteorology, SUPARCO, and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Simultaneous meetings of provincial and district moon sighting committees were also held at their respective headquarters to mark the beginning of the new Islamic year.
