ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman completely rejected the draft of constitutional amendments on Wednesday, calling them “unacceptable and impractical.”

Speaking to the media after visiting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser’s residence, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said his party had thoroughly reviewed the proposed amendments and found them insufficient.

The meeting was held during a luncheon hosted by Asad Qaiser, which was attended by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and other figures. Rehman stated, “We have completely rejected the government’s draft. Supporting these amendments would betray the trust of the nation.”

He also criticized the government for sharing the draft with only a select few, claiming the shared document was not an actual draft. “We have reviewed what was shared and found it unacceptable,” he reiterated.

When asked about PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Maulana Fazlur Rehman smiled but refrained from further comment. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, speaking at the same event, said the meeting was productive, and both PTI and JUI-F had jointly rejected the proposed amendments.

Earlier, it was reported that the government had decided to consult bar associations regarding the proposed constitutional amendments, as many lawyers’ bodies had expressed opposition. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar is expected to brief bar associations to buil+9d consensus on the matter.

On September 16, former President of the Supreme Court Bar, Hamid Khan, announced that a “lawyer’s movement” would begin on September 19 to oppose the amendments.
