Lahore is set to take a significant step toward sustainable urban transport as 27 electric buses will start operating on two major routes later this month. This initiative, led by the Punjab government, aims to modernize public transport while reducing pollution.

Routes and Connectivity

The eco-friendly buses will initially serve two key routes:

  1. Canal Road to RA Bazaar via Railway Station

These routes are designed to provide maximum connectivity and ensure a comfortable commute for Lahore’s residents.

Launch Timeline

The rollout schedule for the electric buses is as follows:

  • January 15, 2025: Arrival at Karachi Port.
  • January 21, 2025: Arrival in Lahore.
  • January 31, 2025: Official launch of operations.

The buses, imported from China, will be unveiled during a special ceremony. Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan will oversee the launch, with Punjab Transport Secretary Dr. Ahmad Javid Qazi outlining their deployment plans.

While fares are yet to be announced, they are expected to be affordable, making the service accessible for daily commuters. The buses will operate during peak travel hours to cater to students, office workers, and other passengers.

Each bus costs Rs. 88 million, with a total investment of Rs. 2.46 billion. Designed to last 12 years, these buses are part of a long-term strategy to reduce vehicular pollution and improve Lahore’s air quality.
