ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Information Commission (PIC) has instructed all federal ministries to ensure compliance with Section 5 of the Right to Information Act, 2017, requiring the proactive disclosure of public information on their official websites.

In a formal letter to the Secretaries of federal ministries, the Commission highlighted the need for transparency and accountability in governance. It underscored the importance of providing public access to critical information without requiring formal requests, promoting openness and greater public engagement in decision-making processes.

As per Section 5 of the Act, public bodies must disclose key details, including their organizational structure, functions, decision-making processes, financial records, and policies. Additionally, information about licenses, permits, contracts, concessions, and public services must also be made available. The Act mandates these disclosures within six months of its enactment.

The PIC emphasized that ministries should establish mechanisms for monitoring the effectiveness of these disclosures. It warned that non-compliance with Section 5 could lead to actions under the Right to Information Act, 2017. Federal ministries have been asked to submit compliance reports by February 15, 2025, outlining steps taken to meet these requirements.

The Commission noted that proactive information disclosure is vital for fostering transparency, building public trust, and enhancing accountability within public institutions. It expressed confidence that federal ministries would comply with the Act and assured its support in facilitating transparent governance.
