Karachi: Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, Muneem Zafar, has labeled K-Electric as the biggest mafia in the public sector power industry.

Speaking to BOL News, Muneem Zafar stated that K-Electric does not generate electricity, yet the government continues to provide subsidies. He criticized the privatization of K-Electric, highlighting that promises made to end load-shedding were false, and the company has become a burden on the public.

He further noted that authorities claim Rs. 68 billion should be recovered from consumers, while K-Electric argues that the amount accounts for electricity theft. Jamaat-e-Islami is fighting for Karachi’s citizens, demanding an end to load-shedding and affordable electricity for the people.

Muneem Zafar questioned why Karachi cannot receive electricity from the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) when the rest of the country does. He revealed that 1,100 megawatts of electricity are supplied to Karachi through NTDC, yet K-Electric’s outdated power plants remain ineffective. He also pointed out that the number of K-Electric consumers has increased from 1.8 million to 3.8 million.

The JI leader accused K-Electric of demanding full bill payments while failing to supply adequate electricity, emphasizing the need to regulate and end K-Electric’s monopoly.

Criticizing the MQM, he said that the party is currently inactive and was involved in K-Electric’s privatization. He urged MQM to repent for selling off Karachi’s institutions.

Muneem Zafar added that if MQM is serious about addressing the issue, discussions can proceed, but he remains skeptical about their sincerity.

It is worth noting that despite receiving Rs. 200 billion in government subsidies, K-Electric has failed to generate even one megawatt of electricity. Additionally, Aljomaih Group, which holds a 9% share in K-Electric, remains in illegal control of the company.
