Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced on Sunday that parking at Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) sites would now be free of charge to provide relief to the city’s residents.

“This decision has been made in the public’s interest,” Wahab stated, adding that KMC’s financial situation has improved significantly.

He explained that after achieving financial stability, the corporation no longer needs to collect Rs 40-50 million in parking fees, as it currently holds over Rs 2 billion in its bank account.

Just a day earlier, Wahab had claimed that KMC recorded a historic Rs 2.3 billion revenue in just seven months, marking a 300% increase in earnings while 751 development projects were underway.

The mayor further announced that an official notification would soon be issued to abolish parking fees and warned that those illegally charging fees under KMC’s name would be arrested. He clarified that fees would no longer be charged at 46 parking sites on 106 major roads in Karachi. However, parking charges would still apply in six cantonment boards and 25 towns of the city.

Emphasizing his commitment to public welfare, Wahab reiterated that his administration’s top priority is to facilitate citizens, especially now that KMC’s financial standing has improved.

Meanwhile, in another major development, the Sindh government has banned the daytime entry of dumpers in Karachi following a rise in fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles.

As per the new directive, dumpers will only be allowed to enter the city between 11 PM and 6 AM, effectively restricting their movement during the day. The decision comes in response to the alarming increase in road accidents caused by these vehicles in recent weeks.
