Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday reaffirmed that no new canals will be constructed without the consensus of all provinces.

Speaking to media after holding consultations with Bilawal, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed that while projects like the Kalabagh Dam may have economic importance, nothing is more vital than preserving the spirit of the federation.

“Pakistan is a federation. Matters that impact the provinces should be resolved through mutual consultation,” said the premier. “We must avoid projects that create division among the provinces. No canal will be built unless there is mutual agreement.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has confirmed that a meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) will be held on May 2 to discuss the issue of canal construction. He made it clear that no work will begin on any new canals unless all provinces agree on the matter during the CCI meeting.

Bilawal Bhutto thanked the prime minister for arranging the meeting and said it’s important to make such decisions together. He reminded everyone that three provinces have already raised concerns about the Kalabagh Dam project. He also stressed that new canals should not be built without agreement from all stakeholders.

The two leaders also talked about India’s recent move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. They both strongly opposed India’s decision and showed unity in standing against it. Bilawal said he supports the federal government’s stance on the matter and condemned India’s action.
