The government of KP announced public holiday on 1st of Muharram to mark beginning of new Islamic year 1447.

The public holiday for 1st Muharram 1447 AH will be observed in accordance with the moon sighting announcement by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, according to an official notification issued by the provincial government.

1st Muharram Holiday

Muharram 2025, marking the start of the Islamic year 1447 Hijri, is expected to begin on Thursday, June 26. Pakistan’s national space agency, SUPARCO, has predicted a strong chance of sighting the new moon that evening.

A SUPARCO spokesperson said the new moon is expected to be born on Wednesday, June 25, at 3:32 PM local time. By sunset on June 26, the moon will be about 28 hours and 15 minutes old, which is ideal for it to be seen.

The latest data shows that in Pakistan’s coastal areas, the moon will stay visible for around 75 minutes after sunset. Clear skies in most parts of the country are also likely to help in spotting the moon.

Ashura in 2025 is expected to be observed on Sunday, July 6, with the new Islamic year 1447 Hijri likely to begin on Friday, June 27, according to astronomical forecasts.

To maintain security during the holy month, the Punjab government has enforced Section 144 from the 1st to the 10th of Muharram. Additionally, pillion riding has been banned on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.
