Why "Ajrak" no plates goes viral???

Sindh government introduced Ajrak-themed number plates in April 2022. These specially designed security feature plates have rapidly gained popularity, with over two million vehicles registered so far, including approximately 1 to 1.2 million motorcycles and 7 to 8 million four wheel vehicles.

The primary purpose of these Ajrak plates is to serve as a robust security measure. Equipped with advanced features, they enable authorities to easily access vehicle owners’ data, thereby facilitating swift identification and apprehension of vehicles involved in crimes.

Additionally, biometric verification of vehicle owners is conducted during the process of changing or issuing these plates, further bolstering security measures.

The Sindh government has extended the deadline for vehicles bearing Ajrak-themed number plates until August 14. During this period, police have been instructed not to issue challans for such plates, encouraging vehicle owners to adopt the new system without penalty.

Minister for Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Mukesh Kumar Chawla emphasized that the initiative is part of the larger “Safe City Project,” aimed at enhancing security infrastructure and crime control through improved vehicle identification.

He also highlighted the cultural significance of the Ajrak motif, stating, “Ajrak represents the cultural identity of Sindh and will remain on number plates.”
