CNIC-Based Vehicle Registration System to Introduce in Sindh

The Sindh cabinet has approved a new vehicle registration system based on CNICs, following a similar model already in place in Islamabad.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held at the Chief Minister’s House, chaired by CM Syed Murad Ali Shah and attended by ministers, advisors, special assistants, the chief secretary, and other relevant officials.

Along with the CNIC-based registration system, the cabinet also approved the registration of seized government vehicles with altered chassis and the establishment of Vehicle Fitness Inspection Centers.

The Excise Department presented a proposal for the new registration system, which will link a vehicle directly to the owner’s CNIC instead of the vehicle’s chassis number. This change will allow vehicle owners to keep and reuse their personalized number plates even after selling their car.

The permanent identification of the vehicle will now be its chassis number, known as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Under the new system, when a vehicle is sold, the number plate will be removed and can be used again by the original owner. If the plate isn’t kept, it will be given up for auction or reissued.

The cabinet agreed to the system in principle and also approved the necessary legal changes to bring Sindh’s registration process in line with international standards and the recent reforms in Islamabad.

The Sindh government also put forward standard operating procedures for registering confiscated government vehicles that have tampered or altered chassis.
