TOKYO: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said her government is working hard to upgrade the province’s infrastructure to the standard of Japan and has already started to see progress in key public sectors, especially health and sanitation.

Speaking to the Pakistani community in Tokyo during her five-day visit to Japan, Maryam said Punjab’s health facilities have improved so much that people from other provinces are now coming there for treatment.

She shared that her government has launched the world’s largest sanitation drive, the Suthra Punjab project, to clean cities and towns across the province. “We have created 150,000 jobs under this initiative to keep Punjab clean,” she said.

Talking about the economy, the chief minister praised overseas Pakistanis for their vital role in helping the country recover. She pointed out that inflation, which was at 38% only a few months ago, has now dropped to 3% under the PML-N government’s efforts.

Maryam also announced that Punjab will adopt Japanese technology to improve waste management and environmental standards. Highlighting the leadership of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, she said he works from 7 am until midnight every day to help Pakistan tackle its challenges.

Outlining plans, Maryam revealed that the government will build 500,000 houses for low-income families in the next five years, with 100,000 to be ready by December. She also announced that 1,100 electric buses will start running across Punjab by the end of this year with a flat fare of just Rs 20. In addition, 50,000 scholarships and 100,000 laptops will be provided to deserving students.
