KARACHI: To ease the pressure of rising electricity bills and promote clean energy, the Sindh government has launched a program to provide free solar panels to low-income families using up to 100 electricity units a month.

The Sindh Energy Department is still accepting applications from eligible households. Families that qualify based on their electricity usage can apply for the scheme.

Under this initiative, 200,000 families will receive solar panels. So far, 77,000 households have already been provided with panels, while another 123,000 will get them in the next phase, according to provincial assembly data.

If applications exceed the available quota, the government will hold a lottery to decide the recipients.

Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said the provincial government is committed to offering affordable and eco-friendly energy options. He made these remarks during a ceremony at the Energy Department office on Monday, where a private company displayed solar home systems, inverters with lithium batteries, and solar panels.

The minister also highlighted that Sindh had set up its first power plant through a Public-Private Partnership. He said the electricity from this plant is cheaper and is being supplied through the Sindh Transmission and Dispatch Company (STDC).
