Audit report reveals PIA failed to recover over Rs20 billion dues

The national flag carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), has failed to recover more than Rs20 billion in pending dues, according to an audit report issued in December 2024.

The report stated that PIA has not been able to collect Rs 20.39 billion in receivables. The Auditor General of Pakistan raised serious concerns about the airline’s failure to recover these aeronautical charges.

Auditors noted that although this issue was highlighted in December 2024, PIA did not take any effective steps to recover the money. They also pointed out that these dues have remained unpaid since the financial year 2019–20, despite multiple meetings with the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) and the Aviation Division.

As of 30 June 2024, when the audit was completed, the amount was still unpaid.

The report criticised PIA for not having a proper recovery plan and for failing to hold a Departmental Accounts Committee (DAC) meeting before the audit was finalised.

Auditors recommended that the Aviation Division step in directly to help recover the outstanding amount as soon as possible.
