Pak-Saudi agreement marks a new chapter of historic ties, says Shehbaz Sharif
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has made it clear that the new defence agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia is not aimed against any country. Instead, he said, it reflects the two nations’ long-standing friendship and trust, which have now been formally strengthened through proper institutional arrangements.
Speaking to Pakistani journalists in London, the Prime Minister explained that under the agreement, an attack on one country would be considered an attack on the other. Both sides, he added, would respond to such a situation through mutual consultation.
Recalling Pakistan’s military history, Shehbaz mentioned the Marka-e-Haq, saying Pakistan had once given India a lesson “it will never forget.”
On the diplomatic side, the Prime Minister described his recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington as very positive, highlighting assurances of stronger economic cooperation.
He said Pakistan’s economy has achieved stability and the government is now working to put it on a growth path despite the heavy losses caused by recent floods. Priorities, he added, include poverty reduction, job creation, attracting investment, and making full use of Pakistan’s potential in agriculture, IT, and mineral resources.
Shehbaz Sharif also stressed that the political and military leadership are “on the same page.” He said he regularly consults with Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir on key national and foreign policy issues.
Paying tribute to the sacrifices of security forces, the Prime Minister said their courage will always be remembered by the nation. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to fight terrorism and added that the country will continue to raise the voices of Kashmiris and Palestinians at the United Nations.
