Sukkur: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said the people of Sindh are strong and will overcome the current flood challenge with courage and unity.

During his visit to Guddu Barrage, he was joined by provincial ministers Jam Khan Shoro, Jam Ikramullah Dharejo, and other officials to review the flood situation. Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro and Irrigation Secretary Zarif Khehro briefed him on the situation.

Officials said the barrage is currently facing a high flood of 627,908 cusecs of water, while its designed capacity is 1.1 million cusecs. Murad Ali Shah said they expect 650,000 to 700,000 cusecs of water to pass through the barrage.

“We hope this flow will pass safely,” he said.

The Chief Minister identified Tori Bund and K.K. Bund as vulnerable points. Officials informed him that teams are actively carrying out flood-fighting efforts, especially at the 18th mile of the K.K. Bund.

Murad Ali Shah said his team has replaced all 25 canal gates and raised the protective dykes (bunds) by six to ten feet. He added that they have also tightened monitoring at the vulnerable spots.

He urged officials to protect people’s lives and property and assured that the government will stand with people everywhere where water pressure is rising. “We will not leave our people alone in these tough times,” he said.
