5.3 magnitude earthquake shakes Islamabad and Northern Pakistan

Tremors from a moderate earthquake were felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa late at night. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.3 and originated in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.

The quake struck at 11:15 p.m. at a depth of 234 kilometers. People in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Swat, Chitral, Dir, and Malakand felt the tremors for a few seconds.

The earthquake’s epicenter was reported about 10 kilometers from Rani Zai in Swat. Fortunately, no casualties or property damage have been reported so far. PMD’s Earthquake Monitoring Cell said the tremor’s depth was moderate.

Residents described the tremors as brief but noticeable, causing many to leave their homes in concern. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
