Islamabad: Makhdoom Ali Khan, a member of the Law and Justice Commission, has resigned from his position, sending his resignation to Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, who had originally appointed him to the commission.

In his resignation, Khan expressed concern over the 27th constitutional amendment, saying it has harmed the independence of the judiciary. He noted that after the 26th amendment, he had hoped for legal reforms and improvement in the legal system, but reality proved otherwise.

Khan said that he once hoped to contribute to law reform and support young lawyers, but the recent changes have “completely sunk” the independence of the judiciary. Without an independent judicial system, he argued, meaningful legal reform is impossible.

He added that the commission was created to improve laws and justice, but under the current circumstances, he cannot continue as a member.

Khan’s resignation raises important questions about the impact of constitutional amendments on judicial independence and the future of law reform in Pakistan.
