KARACHI: Several cities in Sindh set new rainfall records within 24 hours this April, with Karachi witnessing unprecedented rainfall levels.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Karachi Airport recorded 38.6 mm of rain, breaking a 41-year-old April record. The previous record, set in April 1985, was 37 mm.
In Mohenjodaro, 60 mm of rainfall broke a 31-year record, surpassing the 22 mm recorded in 1995.
Other cities also saw historic weather patterns. Larkana recorded a temperature drop to 22.5°C, breaking the previous April low of 26°C set in 1989.
Similarly, Badin recorded 26°C, surpassing the 26.1°C mark from 1967.
Meteorologists have highlighted that the intense rainfall and unusual temperature variations indicate changing weather patterns in Sindh. The citizens are advised to stay cautious as heavy rain can lead to flash flooding and other hazards.
Earlier, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in Karachi on April 6, driven by an incoming system of westerly winds.
According to the Met Office, the system may also bring thunderstorms, rain, and isolated hailstorms to districts such as Sukkur, Kashmore, and Ghotki on April 6.
Additionally, light to moderate rainfall is predicted in several other areas, including Jamshoro, Dadu, Kambar Shahdadkot, Naushahro Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Matiari, Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Thatta, Badin, and Sujawal.
Authorities have warned that strong winds, lightning, and possible hail could damage vulnerable structures like electric poles, billboards, and solar panels.
