KARACHI: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) has announced plans to install a new control gate at the Hub Canal reservoir in an effort to strengthen and stabilize the city’s water supply system.
According to a KW&SC Spokesperson for the water utility, the installation will require the temporary shutdown of the Hub Pumping Station for 12 hours, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 10 p.m. on (today) Tuesday, January 20. During this period, water supply will be suspended in District West and Keamari.
The KW&SC Spokesperson said that hydrants at Crush Plant I and II would also remain closed during the maintenance work. As a result, the city is expected to face a shortfall of approximately 50 million gallons of water for the day. Karachi typically receives around 650 million gallons daily, though officials said that despite the maintenance, about 600 million gallons would continue to be supplied.
KW&SC officials explained that the existing gate at the canal had been causing repeated disruptions in water transmission, making the installation of a new gate unavoidable. The upgrade, they said, is expected to significantly improve the reliability and stability of water delivery across the city once completed.
Residents of District West and Keamari have been urged to use water sparingly during the shutdown
The KW&SC emphasized that the temporary inconvenience is part of broader efforts to modernize Karachi’s water infrastructure and ensure a more dependable supply over the long term.
