Meghan Markle’s new ring is a “Pinky promise” to other women
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were present at the Nelson Mandela celebration on Monday at the United Nations in New York City, where the Duke of Sussex gave a special speech.
The Duchess of Sussex, 40, showed up to the occasion wearing a chic black dress and two diamond rings, special accessories she started wearing in April. The spiraling pinky rings have diamond accents and are made by Shiffon Co., a jewellery firm formed by women that Meghan has supported since last year.
The company’s new tennis collection, which honors the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the law that granted women the freedom to participate in sports in high schools and colleges, includes the new 1972 Tennis Pinky Ring.
At a Shiffon’s event with Break the Love, a “software firm democratizing sports,” on Monday, creator Shilpa Yarlagadda told PEOPLE that tennis was one of the first sports to have equal compensation and have equal pay for all grand slams.
When jewelry-lover Yarlagadda was seeking for a ring but unsure of her size, she came up with the idea for the unusual pinky ring’s spiral pattern. She also understood right away that she wanted her jewellery to have a deeper significance.
The pinky vow to pay it forward and support women was symbolized by the adjustable pinky ring that was the first product that was made, she said.
Yarlagadda, who now calls New York City home, founded her fine jewellery business there in 2017 with the aim of bridging the gender gap, notably in entrepreneurship. According to Yarlagadda, the name of the business plays on the terms “shift is on,” which refers to the company’s goal of “creating the shift for women’s equality,” as well as the fabric chiffon, which she and her mother both adore.
She has frequently emphasized the value of female mentorship in her life and in Shiffon’s development, to the point where she tried to include it in her rings. According to Yarlagadda, “We truly entrenched [mentorship] in the ring because 50% of revenues are paying seed grants for female founders of businesses that empower women.”
The Duchess of Sussex, Michelle Obama, Malala Yousafzai, Hailey Bieber, Serena Williams, and Amanda Gorman are just a few of the company’s many powerful female mentors and supporters. Numerous female business owners, like Kris Strouthopoulous, the founder of the intimates line Giapenta, were present at the event on Monday.
Minnie Mills, who recently received her first pinky ring, said to PEOPLE at the event on Monday: “I love supporting other Asian-owned brands, especially Asian female-owned.”
There is a lot of performative activism nowadays, but Shiffon is “extremely intentional with their message and process,” continued Mills.
Voto claims that she will be repurposing vintage boxes with recycled textiles that “are already out in the world” for Shiffon’s pinky rings in addition to dressing Yarlaggada and some of her mentors.
Every individual bundle that individuals receive will be special, according to Yarlaggada, who told PEOPLE that “expressing originality is really vital, and our individuality is still being exhibited for our products since every lady is doing something inspirational.”
