Hundreds of Paddington Bear toys that had been donated by well-wishers as a memorial to the late Queen Elizabeth were personally presented to a children’s charity by Camilla, the wife of Britain’s King Charles, on Thursday.

In the days of sorrow after Elizabeth’s passing in September, mourners scattered more than 1,000 Paddington bears and other teddy bears among the profusion of floral tributes and messages left outside palaces and royal parks in London and Windsor.

The plush animals have been expertly cleaned, and on Friday, Camilla, the queen consort, stopped by an east London Barnardo’s Nursery for a “teddy bears picnic” complete with marmalade sandwiches and the distribution of some of the Paddington bears to the nursery’s most needy young residents.

Hugh Bonneville and Madeleine Harris, who played Mr. Brown and Judy Brown in the movie versions of the children’s books, joined her. They were two members of the cast from the most current Paddington movie.

The monarchy’s association with Paddington dates back to a June film in which she can be seen sipping tea with the fictional child character. The video was one of the highlights of four days of festivities to honour the monarch’s 70th year on the throne.

She admitted to Paddington in the comical comedy that she always had a marmalade sandwich, the favourite food of the character, in her handbag. (Reuters)
