Pakistani musician Shiraz Uppal noticed a lack of good female voices in the country. In response, he came up with an innovative solution: Neha Gupta, the first AI female singer from the “Indo-Pak” region.

Uppal, a well-known musician and producer, owns S.U. Studios in Lahore, where he combined music and technology to create Gupta. She is an AI-generated entity capable of producing music and vocals.

Intending to address the shortage of quality female voices in Pakistan, Uppal used Gupta’s unique abilities for his son Haadi Uppal’s latest song, “Cheti Aa,” released last Sunday.

Sharing his creative method, Uppal commented, “There is a dearth of good female voices in Pakistan while India is full of female voices. So, I decided to create a unique [female] voice that I can use as per my will. This hasn’t been done in India yet.”

Even with the political tensions between Pakistan and India, Shiraz Uppal believed that Gupta’s voice could be appreciated worldwide, especially in places where Urdu is spoken. He emphasized that “art has no boundaries.”

Pakistani artists, who sometimes face limitations in working in India, often become very popular there. Uppal recognized this challenge and, going against traditional norms, included Gupta, who has an Indian name, as part of Neha.

The project took several months to teach AI the characteristics of a female singer’s voice. Instead of imitating famous voices like Shreya Ghoshal, Shiraz Uppal went for a more natural sound similar to Indian singers Rekha Bhardwaj and Sunidhi Chauhan.

Surprisingly, Uppal used a male voice in falsetto to produce Neha Gupta’s sound, portraying a middle-aged woman in her early 30s. The first song, “Cheti Aa,” featuring his son, received positive feedback. This success led Uppal to consider creating more voices based on the audience’s reaction.

“I can create 10 more voices, but right now, I am waiting for the response I get from Neha Gupta. If it’s very good, I would love to create new male and female voices,” Uppal said.
