Sultana Siddiqui on Actors’ Greed at Award Shows
Sultana Siddiqui, a revered figure in the industry, began her career at PTV as a single mother of three boys and now runs one of Pakistan’s largest television networks.
Recently, Siddiqui appeared on the podcast, where she discussed her life, challenges, and inspirations. She also addressed the evolving culture of award shows in Pakistan, criticizing how some actors now treat these events merely as opportunities to make money.
Sultana Siddiqui disclosed that there is a growing trend of alleged award fixing, with some stars attending shows only if they are assured of receiving a trophy or if they are paid to appear. This practice has its advocates and detractors, and Siddiqui highlighted how this behavior is impacting the industry negatively.
During the Hum Style Awards, Siddiqui recounted an instance where her team invited a star, who asked if they would be receiving a trophy before agreeing to attend. Although people respect Siddiqui and would not say this directly to her, she hears such comments from her team.
Additionally, some stars demand payment for everything, including clapping or presenting an award. She warned that this trend could undermine genuine appreciation, leading to a situation where no one is willing to applaud others’ achievements.
Sultana Siddiqui also shared her experience of taking award shows abroad to showcase Pakistani culture. The first time they held their awards in Canada, they were concerned about the financial risk, planning to spend 40 crores without certainty of breaking even. However, the event was a success.
