Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s Lost Album ‘Chain of Light’ Released
Following the launch of Chain of Light, a previously lost album by the legendary Pakistani musician Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, in Islamabad, additional launch events are scheduled in Lahore today and Karachi on August 31.
The project is a collaboration between Pakistan-based Saiyna Bashir Studios, which is producing a documentary biopic titled Ustad on the music icon, and Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records, which originally recorded the lost album in 1990.
The British Council has supported the initiative, with launch events planned in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Manchester, Birmingham, London, and Paris, leading up to the album’s official release on September 20. The Ustad documentary is expected to be released in late 2025.
Chain of Light features previously unheard recordings of Nusrat and his Qawwal party, captured at Real World Studios in 1990 during the peak of his vocal prowess.
The album has been meticulously restored from the original analogue tapes and includes a pristine version of the classic ‘Ya Allah Ya Rehman’ and the only known performance of ‘Ya Gaus Ya Meeran.’
The launch tour will continue in Manchester on September 10 and Birmingham on September 11, before heading to Paris on September 13.
The final pre-release event will be held in London on September 19, culminating in the official album launch on September 20.
