Pakistan Skipper Babar Azam on Wednesday finally achieved his quest to be the best when he rose to the numero uno position after surpassing Indian Captain Virat Kohli in ICC ODI rankings for batsmen.

Babar Azam, a star of the Under-19 World Cups in 2010 and 2012 and who has been playing ODIs since 2015 kept his promise for becoming the number one, and now leads the Indian captain by eight points.

Words like ‘perfectionist’ and ‘artist’ are not enough to describe the qualities of Pakistan Skipper, as he enjoys a huge list of marvelously played innings turning into match winnings for Pakistan.

By ending Kohli’s 1,258 day-supremacy, Babar Azam has emulated compatriots Zaheer Abbas (1983-84), Javed Miandad (1988-89), and Mohammad Yousuf (2003) as the number one ODI batsman.

Babar Azam also became the second-highest run-scorer in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against South Africa. The right-hander scored 228 runs with the highest score of 103.

Shortly after the World Cup, Azam was named Pakistan’s ODI captain. So far the added responsibility has only further fuelled his success.

In his six ODIs since being named captain, Azam has averaged 89.80 with a strike rate of 102.98, passing 50 four times.

‘I wanted to make a strong impression so they recognize Babar Azam as a skilful batsman.’ Babar Azam said this during an interview to ICC back in 2019, and this is the day he fulfilled what he vowed.

Twitter is also trending with hashtags #BabarAzam and #ViratKohli and social media has a lot to say on this.
