Adam Zampa bowled brilliantly in the ODI series opener the other night. With the ball, he shined, taking 4-38 in ten probing overs and reaching 100 wickets in the 65th ODI.

Mohammad Rizwan (ten), Hasan Ali (two), Mohammad Wasim (nought), and Khushdil were among the wickets taken by Zampa.

Because of the Covid-19 scenario, teams must have strong backups in the squad due to isolation restrictions and strict protocol adherence. Zampa is happy that all of his players took advantage of their chances in the ODI series opener at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

“It’s not ideal when a couple of guys go down especially two guys that we are gonna play, Ashton Agar and Josh Inglis were looking forward to playing competitive cricket but this is how the world is at this moment. The guys who have come in have all contributed,” said Adam Zampa in a press conference.

“We have seen the potential of Cameron Green with the ball, they have got the exposure to the top level, it’s a satisfying night for our team.

“Swepson is obviously getting better and better, it’s been a really tough couple of years for Mitch, he has been running a lot of drinks and been waiting for his opportunity, obviously he has played a couple of T20Is but I think he bowled really well in Test series without much reward,” he added.

Zampa was ecstatic with his spin bowling partner Mitchell Swepson, who he claimed was under pressure but didn’t fold under duress while making his ODI debut.

“In tonight’s ODI debut I think 2/50 odd with the biggest wicket in the Pakistan side (is a great success) so he was under the pump too when he got that wicket, he was getting hit for sixes probably struggling to get into his spell, and he held his nerve which is what you got to do on this level. He bowled really well tonight and I love playing with Mitch.

“I am not sure what conditions will be like for the World Cup. We have experienced quite a lot (of dew) now in T20 games and ODIs where you bat first and defend a total with the wet ball so that was the case tonight, the ball got really wet, I thought the guys did a really good job to build pressure,” he said.

Zampa thought his teammates did a good job bowling with the wet ball under the lights, and he remarked on the impact of dew.

“Obviously, the quicks did an outstanding job, bowled economically and we got wickets at the right time. It always feels like you are under the pump when you are bowling with the wet ball, trying to defend a total but I think when you get the job done, it’s really satisfying – those wins feel really good,” Adam Zampa said.

Babar Azam is usually a big wicket, according to the dextrous leg-spinner, who also claims to have a strong ODI speed.

“It’s obviously a really big challenge, (Babar Azam) has got a really good tempo for ODI cricket, in particular, he broke a record tonight, (scored) 4000 runs pretty quickly so he is great to this format. He is a big wicket same as Virat Kohli is for India.

“I think over the last couple of years, guys have shown a lot of resilience with these situations. Matt Renshaw has arrived as cover so it’s one of those situations when we obviously try to be a bit more careful, you know usually in the common rooms and people’s room, we have been hanging out but in this situation when we get back to the hotel, we make sure it doesn’t spread through the team. obviously, this series is very important, a couple of guys go down and we are under the pump,  it’s not ideal before another tour starts, so we got to be careful,” Adam Zampa concluded.
