Lawrence’s club has described her as “bubbly,” “fun,” and “beautiful.”
In a touching gesture, UWE Rugby will retire her No. 11 jersey in her honour.
The following was an emotional club statement: “Celebrating the life of Maddy ‘Twinkle toes’ Lawrence, who sadly passed away on March 25th.
“Maddy exemplified what it meant to be a UWE Women’s Rugby Player, eagerly ‘tackling’ each new skill.
“She proudly represented our club both on and off the rugby pitch, growing into the sport and our rugby family.
“Maddy was a bubbly girl who was so fun to be around.
“Whenever she smiled and laughed you couldn’t help but smile and laugh with her.
“That was the sort of player, friend, sister and daughter Maddy was.
“Her unending energy has left its imprint on this club; she will always be our number 11 and a friend.
“In Maddy’s honour and memory, we will retire the number 11 shirt.
“Rest in peace, our lovely girl.”
Following the shocking news, UWE players have requested that all women’s rugby teams across the country hold a one-minute applause before this weekend’s matches.
The club will also set up a fundraising page to help her bereaved family.
Lawrence was remembered by both the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and the University of the West of England (UWE).
“On behalf of everyone at the RFU, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to Maddy Lawrence’s family and friends,” they tweeted.
“Everyone in the game is thinking of UWE Women’s Rugby, their players, members, and the wider rugby community.”
“Everyone in the UWE Bristol community is profoundly shocked and saddened by the death of our student and talented Women’s Rugby player Maddy Lawrence,” a UWE Bristol spokesperson said.
“At this difficult time, we would like to express our heartfelt condolences and sympathies to Maddy’s family, friends, and teammates.”
