Allyson Felix, the legendary American track and field athlete, announced on Wednesday that she will retire this year, concluding a three-decade career that featured a record-setting 11 Olympic gold.

In an Instagram post, the 36-year-old stated that she planned to enter her final season as an expression of thanks to the sport.

“I have given everything I have to run and for the first time, I’m not sure if I have anything left to give,” Felix said.

“I want to say goodbye and thank you to the sport and people who have helped shape me the only way I know how – with one last run,” she added.

“This season isn’t about the time on the clock, it’s simply about joy.

“If you see me on the track this year I hope to share a moment, a memory and my appreciation with you.”

Felix did not reveal her competitive plans, but it’s safe to assume she’ll be competing in this year’s World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in July.

Felix is the most accomplished woman in Olympic track and field history, having won the first of her 11 medals in the 4x400m relay at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and the last at last year’s Tokyo Games.

She is also the most decorated athlete in World Championships history, male or female, with 18 medals, seven in solo events and 11 in relays.

Felix competed in the pandemic-affected Tokyo Olympics last year, three years after giving birth to daughter Camryn by emergency C-section in 2018.

She has subsequently become an outspoken advocate for working mothers’ rights, and in 2019 she parted ways with long-time sponsors Nike after criticizing the company for reducing her income when she became pregnant.

Felix said on Wednesday that a theme of her farewell season would be her advocacy for women.

“This season I’m running for women,” she wrote. “I’m running for a better future for my daughter. I’m running for you.

“More to come on that, so stay tuned, but I’ll be sharing a series of announcements that I’m hoping will make the world better for women. Here’s to my final season.”
