Bayern Munich has long been regarded as one of Europe’s finest clubs, routinely dominating in their own nation while also competing on a European level.

Their most recent Champions League victory came in 2020, when they defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in a closed-door final to finish off a fantastic treble-winning season.

They trail Villarreal 1-0 in the quarter-finals in 2021/22, but they welcome the Spanish side to their home field for the second leg, where they are still widely favoured to advance.

We take a look back at their history in the tournament and examine their credentials as one of Europe’s most successful clubs.

Bayern Munich is in the top half of the competition with six wins, tied with Liverpool but one behind second-placed AC Milan and seven behind runaway leaders Real Madrid. Their most recent victory came two years ago in the final, when they defeated PSG 1-0 thanks to a Kingsley Coman goal.

Between the 1973/74 and 1975/76 seasons, they won three Champions League titles in a row. They have, however, endured defeats, most famously in the 1998-99 final, when Manchester United snatched a victory in Barcelona with two injury-time goals.

The team’s next victory came in the 2000/01 season, when they defeated Valencia on penalties. In 2009, they reached the final, but were defeated by Jose Mourinho’s treble-winning Inter. Then came another bitter defeat in 2012, this time to Chelsea: despite dominating the final for the whole game, they were defeated on penalties — and at home.

They did, however, win the next year’s final, defeating German rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1 thanks to a late Arjen Robben strike.

Who is Bayern’s top scorer in the Champions League?

Robert Lewandowski has 68 goals in 77 Champions League games for Bayern Munich and shows no signs of slowing down. With 12 goals and three assists this season, the Poland striker leads the scoring statistics.

The evergreen Thomas Muller is next on the list, who, despite being more of a creative force behind Lewandowski in recent years, has a truly outstanding 52 goals in 133 appearances.

Former star winger Robben completes the top three, followed by ex-strikers Mario Gomez and Giovane Elber, who won 13 titles with Bayern Munich, including the Champions League in 2001.
