Derby County’s hopes of avoiding relegation were dashed this afternoon after QPR confirmed their relegation to League One.
The Rams were defeated 1-0 by Rangers at Loftus Road, with Luke Amos’ late goal condemning them to defeat and ensuring their place in the Championship’s bottom three.
Derby has fought valiantly throughout the season in what has been a turbulent season off the field, with the club entering administration in September.
The Rams have also punished 21 points and were subjected to a transfer embargo, making Wayne Rooney’s job even more difficult. Derby, on the other hand, would be on 52 points and comfortably in mid-table if it hadn’t been penalised for being in administration and FFP violations, highlighting Rooney’s achievements in the face of adversity.
As the Rams await word of acquisition by American billionaire Chris Kirchner, he has received a slew of messages of support from fans of his old team, Manchester United.
Here’s what United supporters had to say about it…
One supporter said: “Feeling sad for @WayneRooney & of course the players of @dcfcofficial for the effort they put in to stay in EFL Championship. They deserved better.”
Another commented: “Wayne Rooney deserves the utmost praise for what he achieved at Derby County this season, despite all troubles around the future. I hope to see him manage at highest level in the future.”
