Hunter Armstrong qualified for the 2022 swimming World Championships by setting a world record of 23.71 seconds in the 50m backstrokes in the US trials in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Thursday.
At the European Championships in Budapest on May 18, 2021, Armstrong, 21, smashed the previous world record of 23.80 set by Russian Kliment Kolesnikov.
“I’m at a loss for words, honestly,” Armstrong said after grabbing the only World Championships berth on offer in the non-Olympic event.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted and I’m over the moon right now.”
Caeleb Dressel, a seven-time Olympic gold medalist, won his third individual World Championships spot in the 100m butterfly.
Dressel, who won Olympic gold in Tokyo last year by setting a world record of 49.45 seconds, posted a world-leading 50.01 in Thursday’s heats and won the final in 50.20.
Michael Andrew finished second in 50.88 to earn a spot at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, from June 18 to July 3.
Dressel had previously qualified for Budapest in the 100m free and 50m fly after winning five gold medals in the pandemic-affected Tokyo Games last year.
Andrew returned to win the 50m breaststroke in an American record time of 26.52, edging Nic Fink by three-hundredths of a second for the only World Championships spot.
Torri Huske won the women’s 100m fly in 56.28 seconds, with Claire Curzan coming in second in 56.35 seconds — the world’s two fastest speeds this season.
Carson Foster won the men’s 400m individual medley in 4:09.33, with Chase Kalisz of the Tokyo Olympics coming in second in 4:10.50. Bobby Finke, who missed out on a World Championships berth by seven-hundredths of a second, made a frantic late charge against Kalisz.
Katie Grimes, 16, set a personal best of 4:36.17 in the women’s 400m medley to earn a berth in Budapest with Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Emma Weyant, who finished second in 4:37.72.
In the women’s 50m backstrokes, Katharine Smith set an American record of 27.12 seconds, and Lilly King won the women’s 50m breaststroke in 29.76 seconds to give herself a chance at a third straight world title in the event.
