Joe Root, England’s most successful Test captain, has stepped down from the leading role.

Joe Root announced his retirement from the England Test captaincy on Friday, April 15th, after five years as captain.

Root guided England to victory in 64 of their matches, winning 27 of them. As England Men’s Test Captain, he held the record for the most matches and victories.

Root made headlines during his tenure for noteworthy triumphs such as a 4-1 win over India at home in 2018, a 3-1 win away to South Africa in 2020, and winning a Test series in Sri Lanka twice.
