Daniil Medvedev, the world number two, advanced to the second round of the French Open with ease, but Denis Shapovalov, the 14th seed, was knocked out in the first round.

Medvedev, the US Open champion, defeated Argentine Facundo Bagnis, ranked 103rd, 6-2 6-2 6-2.

Last year, the Russian made his first quarter-final at Roland Garros after four consecutive first-round losses.

Following a hernia repair in April, he was hesitant about his participation.

“Roland Garros is one of my favorite tournaments, especially since last year. I’m hoping to go even further this year,” Medvedev will next meet either Serb Laslo Djere or Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis.

“I didn’t believe I’d be able to play on clay after the operation, but with the help of the doctor and rehab, I was able to return. Physically, I am in perfect condition.”

Meanwhile, after a straight-sets loss to Danish 19-year-old Holger Rune, 2021 Wimbledon semi-finalist Shapovalov stated he “didn’t really show up.”

The 23-year-old Canadian, who reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open earlier this year, produced a whopping 53 unforced errors en route to a 6-3 6-1 7-6 (7-4) victory.
