During the winter of 2008, Paul Newsham’s Yorkshire home would sound like an ancient telephone exchange switch room every Saturday night.

Every time the phone rang, his wife Julie would comment, “That’ll be someone calling about Mason, to check if he’ll be playing.”

Scouts called to see if Mason Greenwood, the six-year-old who would go on to become Manchester United’s prodigiously skilled striker, would be playing for the boys’ team Newsham coached in the north of England, Idle FC, the next day.
Greenwood has obviously made an influence on the pitch throughout his career.

Should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side beat Sevilla in Sunday’s semifinal, he might also assist United reach the Europa League final.

Greenwood became became the third youngster to score 10 or more Premier League goals in a single season after scoring 10 in his debut season.

Former England captain Alan Shearer has predicted that Greenwood will overtake him as the EPL’s all-time leading scorer. Those at United who have worked with the teenager, according to former Liverpool player and now football pundit Jamie Redknapp, say he’s one of the best the club has ever seen, while another former England star, Gary Lineker, has said it “won’t be long” before Greenwood is selected by England manager Gareth Southgate. The list of fans appears to go on forever.
Those who watch United attentively, though, have known for years about a young talent named Greenwood rising through the ranks. From an early age, the player has been surrounded by hyperbole and enthusiasm.
