World number two Daniil Medvedev and 2021 runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas aim for the last 16 of the French Open, while untroubled women’s top seed Iga Swiatek aims for her 31st win in a row.
In the semi-finals, Medvedev and Tsitsipas are seeded to face each other.
Medvedev had appeared to be the most likely to reach that stage thus far, dropping only 16 games in two straight-set victories.
Tsitsipas, on the other hand, had to come back from two sets down to overcome Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the first round.
Then he took four hours to beat 134th-ranked qualifier, Zdenek Kolar, in a fourth-set tiebreaker, preserving set points.
Medvedev faces Miomir Kecmanovic, the 28th seed, who reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last year after four consecutive first-round exits.
With a semi-final appearance in Munich and a quarter-final appearance in Belgrade, where he took Novak Djokovic to three sets, the 22-year-old Serb has had a strong clay season. In Rio and Santiago, he also reached the last eight.
Kecmanovic began the year ranked 69th in the world, and his all-court style helped him reach the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells and Miami Masters tournaments.
Kecmanovic, who is in the last 32 at Roland Garros for the first time, is playing in Paris with a career-high ranking of 31.
“Medvedev is playing good, but of course, it’s not his favorite surface, he doesn’t feel the most comfortable here,” said Kecmanovic.
“So if I want to play him I think it’s definitely better to play him on clay than somewhere else.”
Tsitsipas will face unseeded Swedish man Mikael Ymer, the world number 95, who entered the tournament on a seven-match losing record dating back to a semi-final loss to Alexander Zverev in Montpellier in February.
Ymer, on the other hand, has recovered his form in Paris, reaching the third round for the second year in a row.
The third round also features two confrontations between tennis’s past and future.
Hugo Gaston, 21, is the opponent for Holger Rune, who is only 19 years old. Gilles Simon, 37, of France, is playing his final year on the circuit and will meet former US Open champion Marin Cilic, 33.
Simon, who was formerly rated sixth and is now ranked 158, has made the fourth round three times since his debut in 2005.
He leads Cilic, the 23rd-ranked player, 6-1 in their career, with their first match taking place at Wimbledon in 2007.
Swiatek, the women’s world number one, is bidding for a second French Open championship after winning in 2020. She has a 30-match winning streak and has only dropped four games in two rounds so far.
The 20-year-old Pole will face Danka Kovinic, the 95th-ranked player in the world, who reached the third round of the Australian Open in January, upsetting US Open champion Emma Raducanu along the way.
a wildcard from France Irina-Camelia Begu, the 227th-ranked wildcard who knocked off former world number one Karolina Pliskova in the second round, will meet Leolia Jeanjean, the 227th-ranked wildcard.
Paula Badosa, the third seed, will face Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the 29th seed, who reached the quarter-finals in 2021.
Badosa has won both of the pair’s confrontations this year, including a three-game victory on the Madrid clay.
