Senior PML-N politician Rana Mashood has stated that the existing government will replace Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja in a few weeks or as soon as other pressing issues are settled, The News reported.

Ramiz has been urged to “gracefully” resign from the position by Mashood, a former regional sports minister. After Ehsan Mani’s term ended in August 2021, then-Prime Minister Imran Khan appointed Raja.

Mashood claimed during a press conference that Ramiz should have resigned as PCB Chairman the moment the PTI administration was deposed.

“I don’t see any future for Raja in Pakistan cricket.” Mashood said, adding that the government hasn’t been able to take an immediate decision in this regard due to other “important and pressing issues”.

Mashood, a major member of the Punjab government, also hinted at the resurgence of departmental sports and announced the establishment of a sports endowment fund.

“Department of Sports is being revived to provide employment to the players,” he maintained.

Last month, Ramiz stated that the government had urged him to stay on as chairman of the PCB.

“I am not going anywhere. The newly elected government has directed me to keep working,” Ramiz had told.

It should be mentioned that, due to Najam Sethi’s close relations with the Sharif family, he may shortly succeed Raja as the next PCB chief.

When Imran Khan was sworn in as Prime Minister in 2018, former PCB Chairman Sethi stepped down. In 2017, he was appointed to a three-year term, but his strained relationship with Khan forced him to resign early.

In addition to Sethi, Shakil Sheikh, former PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf, and former Lahore area president Khawaja Nadeem have all been mentioned as possible PCB chairman candidates.
