Manchester United’s chances of signing Frenkie de Jong have been shattered after Barcelona’s vice-president stated that the club does not need to sell any players for ‘financial reasons.’

The Red Devils have been in talks with the La Liga giants about signing the Dutchman, with sources claiming that an initial bid of roughly £52 million was turned down by the Catalans.

De Jong is content at Camp Nou, telling reporters last night that while he is ‘flattered’ by United’s interest, he is already at the ‘world’s biggest club.’

United’s pursuit of De Jong has always been ambitious, but they were hoped to take advantage of Barcelona’s precarious financial condition in order to sign the former Ajax midfielder.

Eduard Romeu, on the other hand, claims that the club is in no condition to sell and that any outgoing players will be sold on sports grounds.

‘We don’t have any revenue from player sales at the end of the season,’ Romeu stated.

‘Any rash choice in this area will be strictly technical.’

Christian Eriksen, a free agent this summer after a brief stint with Brentford, has received an offer from United.

The Dane is said to want to stay in London, where he has received offers from both the Bees and his previous club Tottenham Hotspur.

United’s interest in De Jong is considered to be unrelated to a move for Eriksen.
