James Vince, Hampshire’s all-time Twenty20 run scorer, hit 14 runs as the Hawks beat Somerset by the same score in Taunton during the Vitality Blast.

After losing the toss, Hampshire scored 208 runs for 5, with the help of 129 not out from the visiting captain, who smashed 10 sixes and 9 fours. Tom Prest, who is only 19 years old, tied a personal best with a 62.

Somerset scored 193-9 after rain delayed play. Tom Banton and Rilee Rossouw each scored 54 runs off 38 balls. Chris Wood scored 26.

Hampshire moved up to fifth place in the South Group, while Somerset stayed in second.

Vince’s amazing attack topped Michael Lumb’s unbroken 124 for Hampshire against Essex in 2009.

Ben McDermott, his opening partner, was caught top-edging a draw stroke off Tom Lammonby on the game’s third pitch.

Vince was scoring so fast it hardly mattered. His fourth Blast century came off the first three balls of the 18th over, while his second fifty took just 15 balls.

Ross Whiteley, Joe Weatherley, and James Fuller fell. Vince’s ninth six off Peter Siddle’s penultimate ball capped a memorable innings.

The Somerset ace powerplay was responsible for 45 points. McDermott hit four sixes off Fuller’s bowling to Will Smeed.
