Meg Lanning and the late Shane Warne have been named to the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. They have given their extra ordinary services to cricket as well as for the people.

Lanning has been awarded Member (AM) in the General Division for significant service to women’s cricket at the elite level. She has led Australia to consecutive T20 World Cup titles and, most recently, the ODI World Cup.

Since taking over as Australia captain in 2014, when she was 21, Lanning has won three T20 World Cups, three Ashes titles in 2015, 2019, and 2021-22 (she missed 2017-18 due to injury), and a record-breaking 26-match ODI winning streak. She is Australia’s leading run-scorer in T20Is and is closing in on the same feat in ODIs.

Warne, who died of a heart attack in Thailand on March 4 at the age of 52, has been posthumously appointed an Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to cricket as a player, role model, and commentator, to the community through charitable initiatives, and for philanthropic contributions.

Warne’s extraordinary feats on the field, which earned him 1,001 international wickets, place him among the greatest cricketers of all time, but this honour also recognizes his broader impact on the game and society.

Warne auctioned off his baggy green to benefit bushfire victims in 2020, and it fetched more than AUD$1 million – a record price for an item of Australian sports memorabilia.

There was also the Shane Warne Foundation, which raised AUD$7.8 million for sick and underprivileged children in Australia before closing after a dozen years.

And his influence extended beyond Australia, with contributions to the 2011 Christchurch earthquake recovery and the rebuilding of Galle, Sri Lanka, and its cricket stadium following the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.

Other cricketers honored as Members (AM) in the General Division include Doug Walters, a former allrounder who played 74 Tests, and Muriel Picton, a former Australia captain who played seven Tests between 1961 and 1969.

“Muriel Picton and Doug Walters both have a special place in Australian cricket, and we are delighted that they have been named Members of the General Division today.”
