Rui Vitoria
Egypt has appointed Rui Vitoria, formerly of Benfica of Portugal, as its new national team coach following the dismissal of Ehab Galal, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
“The Egyptian Football Association has reached a final deal with Portuguese Rui Vitoria to lead the Egyptian national team for the next four years,” the association wrote on Twitter.
According to Egyptian media sources, the Portuguese coach, who led Benfica to the Primeira Liga title in 2016 and 2017, will receive an annual salary of 2,4 million euros.
Former coach Galal was fired on June 16 after the Pharaohs suffered a shocking 2-0 loss to Ethiopia in the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
After succeeding Carlos Queiroz, who guided Egypt to the AFCON final, which they lost to Senegal in February, his tenure lasted only two months.
Under Queiroz, Egypt lost to Senegal in the African qualifying match for this year’s World Cup in Qatar.
